📌Friday Five #127
Incognito browsers, January job cuts, Google’s Quality Rater Guidelines, ChatGPT chaos and the truth about solopreneurship
1. Show Mama the flights
The #1 reason to use an incognito browser? To book airline travel, of course! This bit from comedian Ceara Jane O’Sullivan (who just got hired to write for SNL) is safe for work, but you won’t be able to stop laughing. "Cannot let the internet know I want to fly or the internet will make it expensive to fly!”
2. If the January job cuts come for you
According to a December 2022 survey of 1,000 business leaders conducted by Resume Builder, 60% of respondents said their organizations will likely layoff employees in the new year. And January is traditionally the biggest month for layoffs. Here’s what to do if you’re impacted.
3. Google spells search E-E-A-T
ICYMI, Google updated its Quality Rater Guidelines (QRG) on December 15. You may already be familiar with the acronym EAT, which stands for expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness—the three criteria Google uses to determine whether their search ranking systems provide helpful, relevant information. This latest update adds an additional “E” for experience, asking: “Does [the] content also demonstrate that it was produced with some degree of experience, such as with actual use of a product, having actually visited a place or communicating what a person experienced?” Learn more about the update here.
4. Me, myself and I
Thinking about becoming your own boss in 2023? Here are 12 insights from solopreneurs to consider before you make the leap.
5. Automagic naming
Tanj, the NYC-based brand naming studio, created Chatnamer, a ChatGPT-based tool to generate brand and product names. I happen to be working on a naming project this week, so I gave it a try, which required answering seven questions. I wasn’t wowed by the results, but Tanj reassures me that Chatnamer’s still learning. (By the way, “A Skeptical Take on the A.I. Revolution” from The Ezra Klein Show is a fascinating take on all the ChatGPT buzz.)
